These are noisy/dreamy albums that I feel like a lot of people would enjoy. I’m not a shoegaze connoisseur, but I love albums that make noises; here are my favorites as of recently:

I like this album because she is very cool. That is all I can say (laughs).

But seriously, I just love how lightweight it is. This album feels like you’re on the road, on your way to your hometown. Very comforting, very easy to pick and listen to on everyday basis.

I’ve been following a lot of Tavito Nanao’s music recently. He was dubbed as “the last genius of Japanese music." It’s not really shoegaze/dream pop in the traditional sense, but a lot of the songs possess dream pop/shoegaze qualities. There is a really funny review of this album and it goes as follows:

“He has created the most beautiful album in the world. They cover all kinds of genres, from lo-fi folk to post-rock, shoegaze, modern jazz, and drum’n’bass. His singing voice is the voice of God in heaven. His very clear voice guides people to happiness. I recently saw Tabito Nanao live, and he led many generations, including adults, children, and the elderly, into a mysterious world. He is probably the most humane God."

3. syrup16g – 《HELL-SEE》

I discovered this album in the past month or two, and I was really captivated by it. It has a very gloomy sound. At first listen, I kind of brushed it off as another J-rock cliché. I was expecting some post-rock type of thing (mostly because of the 1 hour runtime). But on a second listen, I finally understood, especially after reading more about Mr. Takashi Igarashi and how his lyrics work.

It has a strong atmosphere and shoegaze/dream pop textures on a lot of its songs. This album is the opposite pole of 浮躁, it’s what I call Dark Dream Pop. Great for night car rides or staying up alone until 2 AM.

4. Cherry Bombshell – 《Luka Yang Dalam》

A cult-status local band from my country that not many people know about, even among those who dabble in the shoegaze/dream pop scene (partly because they’re not in digital streaming and their releases are rare collector items by now).

There are traces of Lush and Cocteau Twins here and there, carried over from their debut (they even name their band after Miki Berenyi’s hair dye color). But to me, it has a really mature melancholic songwriting that sets them apart from most Indonesian band at the time. To me, the vocalist, Widi, has a soft, unique voice that just feels like getting hit with a pillow inside your ears.

5. Five Pebbles – 《forgetmenot》

I’m not huge on modern shoegaze, since a lot of it often feels gimmicky (for example, overusing noise and reverb/delay just to fit the “shoegaze” label). But this one, I feel, uses noise as a storytelling device and feels genuine. I was already aware of Weatherday before this EP, and I got intrigued right away on first listen because of how ridiculously noisy it is.

This one’s unapologetic and assaults your ears from start to finish. The songs get progressively distorted which makes the music feel like it’s crying out for help as it slowly disintegrates into forgotten memory (cue, album title). I think that’s something Sputnik just does really well with his releases.
